Grading the Draft
« on: October 30, 2008, 06:26:59 PM »
Well, as it turned out, I was not able to attend our draft, which really ticked me off. And since I had only minutes of warning (child, hospital, croup, etc), I was not able to review my rankings. Luckily I had set my rankings a couple of weeks ago, so the damage wasn't too bad. Needless to say, I was apprehensive. I ended up with a few players I wouldn't have picked, and in some cases, that will probably be a good thing. Here goes:

KEEPERS
I think DWill is going to be the #2 fantasy PG in the league this year, so that's nice. But Gerald Wallace is fighting it out with Durant, Bynum, and Granger as the least valuable and/or least proven keeper in the league.

BRICKLAYERS
Round 3: Chris Bosh
In the last few days, I had changed my mind about this one. I was going to pick Al Jefferson here. But now I have Bosh for possibly another three years. There's nothing wrong with Chris Bosh. He's been good to me in the past, and I think I'll end up being better off. 25/10/4/1.5/1 with 50% FG and 80% FT is not out of the question.

Round 4: Vince Carter
I would not have picked Carter here, perhaps not at all; and that might have been a mistake. I think Carter will have a big year, so even though I'm not a fan, he's probably a great pick for me here.

Round 5: Ron Artest
If I were online, I would have picked Maggette over Artest, mostly because I am not a fan of Won-Won. He may end up being better for me, but I would rather have taken Maggette. Jihad would have busted a cranial artery over it, too. Jihad, am I right? Huh? Yeah I'm right. Missed opportunities . . .  :'(

Round 6: Brad Miller
It was time for another center, and Miller is very good. I like the pick, but I'm kind of a believer in Dalembert now. But Miller will be solid for me.

Round 7: Al Horford
Horford was my 7th pick. Exactly where I hoped to get him.

Round 8: John Salmons
When I first saw this, I was really ticked. But then I started to realize I needed a SG/SF pretty bad at this point in the draft, and Salmons has a good chance to be solid. The first game is encouraging . . . 24/5/5 or something like that. If I were online, I would be a proud owner of Derrick Rose at this point, and that might have been a mistake, but probably not.

Round 9: Francisco Garcia
I like Garcia, and I think he will be strong this year. But I would have taken Villanueva, Rose, or Thomas ahead of him. I don't need two wings from the same team. This one, although he'll be good, may hurt me a bit.

Round 10: Nene Hilario
Somewhere the Fantasy BBall Gods, and pretty much every old timer in this league, are laughing. Oh the irony, that the year after I finally break my Nene habit, I end up with him at no fault of my own. But I'll deal with it, because this is the break-out year. BELIEVE!

Rounds 11, 12, 13, 14
11. Moon is a nice player and gets me some versatility and nice defensive stats. Probably would have taken Fernandez here though. 12. Matt Barnes, if he holds on to the starting job, might be a steal. 13. Alston will be a capable second PG if he stays healthy. 14. McDyess is okay, but I would have taken Nate Robinson here, because I'm now thin at PG and fat at PF/C. Stupid Yahoo computers!

OVERALL
I have no idea how I'm going to do this year. If Gerald Wallace improves some more, I might be a tough matchup. So far though, I see myself as middle of the pack, and slightly unbalanced toward the bigs.

Grades for all of you (from a guy who has never won this thing) are forthcoming. Wait with baited breath.

These were critical rounds for me.  It was a toss up between Carter and Magette with a STRONG leaning towards Magette. The 3rd round was going to be either Bosh, Jefferson or Gasol, in that order.  I totally went "homer" when Bosh was off the board and picked Gasol instead of Jefferson.  But that instantly got me thinking about Magette, since you and I are the only ones who seem to "man-love" value him.  Keep in mind I probably would have got him ahead of you anyway in the 4th round, my biggest priority after round 3 was an SG.  But I thought you were auto-picking so I took Jamison first and sort of gambled that you would auto-pick guys ahead of Magette and you did so the gamble paid off.  I gambled twice in the draft by passing up who I really wanted because my 2nd choice was going to be auto-picked.  It worked with Magette but failed with Al Thorton, although the trade off of landing and injured Ellis over getting Thorton is not something I'm too upset about.

I did not get to attend either.  I pre-rated a few players, most of which got picked up, but was able to end up with a few decent players.  I thought I did a decent job drafting last year and obviously fell well short of that this year seeing as I didn't really get to pick much.

Keepers:

Wade, after what he showed in the summer in China, I expect him to be a top 5 shooting guard the entire league.  He puts up great numbers across the board and is FINALLY healthy.  I kind of got torched picking him up last year so I really hope he makes it up for me lol

Bynum, half homer pick half planned.  I realize he is a bit of a gamble as a keeper but compared to the other big men I had on my roster he was a solid choice IMO.  Two of the  reasons I wanted to pick him up was his shot blocking and rebounding.  I don't expect him to score a lot of points on a loaded Lakers squad and that is not why I picked him up.  Most likely he will be in the top 5 in shot blocking if he can stay healthy.  That is really a stat that a lot of people don't think about too much or plan on winning. The points to me are really a bonus since I planned on picking up other players who score.    With the defense I've seen so far there should be plenty of chances for him to block shots and getting defensive rebounds.

Would have been great to keep both CP3 and Wade...

Players I wanted:

There was one player I wanted that I got and two that I was hoping to get way later.  I don't know where everyone went for me so I left it out.

Michael Redd is a player I wanted because I needed a top notch 3 pt shooter, a good shooter, and a solid scorer.

Travis Outlaw is another played I wanted.  Though I was hoping I could have got him wayyy later in the draft.  That was the plan.  Sadly I have a strange feeling he went too early.  Anyone wanna chime in here?  Though I am glad I picked him up.  I expect the Blazers to be very competitive and I think he has a good jumper for a big guy.

Lamar Odom is the player I didn't really want but was willing to pick him up wayyy later in the draft.  While he posts great numbers across the board....it only happens ever 4-5 games.  Last year he was GREAT for a stretch and then would make me scratch my head when he would have 5 points 2 rebounds and 3 assists in 30 minutes for multiple games.  HOPEFULLY since this is a contract year and he leads a second unit that looks to score a lot of points that he can pitch in on the assists spot for me.  He is still a solid rebounder so that should help.  Though again, looks like a stupid homer pick and I didn't mean it to be heh

Random guys I got....Bibby, Rando, Watson, Warrick, and FLIPPIN TROY MURPHY.  Bibby is a solid back up PG in the squad but he is not exactly a major weapon anymore.

Rando will post solid numbers just by being on the same floor as Ray Allen, KG, and PP but again he'll be single digits most nights.

Watson...cheaper version of Rando IMO.

Warrick and Murphy...don't care bleh.  Probably will cut them, we will see.

I give myself a FAIL for the simple fact I did not even draft outside of selecting a few players the other night while I was playing around with all the fantasy stuff.

If you are wondering when players were picked you can look at the draft results by round.

Picking up marc gasol on waivers dulls the pain a bit, so far, 20/9 vs the warriors

in the first half

Gasol was a good pickup, I had him on my watchlist and if he's going to contribute it will be early on, towards the end of the season I think he will drop off cause of the length of the NBA season.  I had a couple of other guys on my watch list that have been picked up and I felt a little bad about not pulling the trigger sooner.  You snooze you loose I guess.

I'd reply to defend myself but it's true.  It's not looking good for me this year.  I blame my stupid brother and his horrible driving skills.

"History shouldn't be a mystery"
"Our story is real history"
"Not his story"

"My people's culture was strong, it was pure"
"And if not for that white greed"
"It would've endured"
